I am quickly becoming a fan of Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow. Bound and Determined was a refreshingly unique BDSM themed erotic romance. It captivated me from the first chapter and kept me enthralled with its character driven storyline. Both heroes were so well written and likeable that I rallied behind them and rejoiced at how far both characters had developed throughout their journey together. I loved this book, and I hated for it to end.

College student Sterling Baker was just starting to experiment a little with the BDSM lifestyle with his best friend Alex. When Alex takes Sterling to a local BDSM club, Sterling has a feeling that this lifestyle has been what’s missing in his life. Sterling is shocked to find Professor Owen Sawyer as part of the D/s scene. As he watches the dominant Owen put a submissive through a scene, Sterling immediately recognizes that Owen is the man he’s been looking for to guide him into the submissive lifestyle. Now he just has to convince Owen of that too.

Owen was intrigued and more than a little irritated when Sterling approaches him to train him as a submissive. Sterling was a challenging student his freshman year, and it appears that his stubbornness and determination to get his way hasn’t changed since they butted heads in lit class. Even though he’s more than a little attracted to Sterling, he’s not interested in showing Sterling the ropes…or so he tells himself. Even when Owen tells Sterling “no” Sterling is nothing but persistent. Eventually Owen decides to take the young man under his wing and a tentative relationship starts to develop.

Both men have to work through some issues before they can come to truly trust and love one another. Sterling has a father that doesn’t accept him and frequently does what he can to make his life miserable, while Owen must learn to stop guarding his heart from past hurts and disappointments. As they talk and learn from one another a pretty amazing relationship develops, but will they be able to work through their past issues and put their trust in each other?

Here’s one reason why this is a top pick for me. I LOVED the open communication that develops between Sterling and Owen. The friendship, love and trust they find with one another slowly develops throughout the book. They don’t immediately jump into a heavy scene and they don’t immediately fall in love at first sight. Both things grow gradually as the book progresses, and it’s a very beautiful thing to watch as their feelings grow between them. Sterling and Owen actually have some wonderful conversations together and it’s not always a bed of roses for either of them. They’re both stubborn, they argue, make-up, make mistakes, have fun together, discover new things about each other and most importantly learn to love and a trust each other. This was very refreshing for this type of romance, and I not only loved the relationship that they formed with one another; I appreciated it as well.

Also, I admit that I enjoy a BDSM themed romance and I thought that this one was very well written and not over the top. I thought the D/s relationship that Sterling and Owen have is a very realistic one and it’s one that I can definitely envision becoming stronger and flourishing even more as they spend many happy years together.

I’m really looking forward to reading more from this writing team. I recommend this book for those who are looking for something unique, and if you like a strong character driven romance. I know that the BDSM theme will turn some readers off and that’s a shame, because at the heart of the book it’s about Sterling and Owen and the once in a lifetime love that they find with one another.

Sterling is a college senior. He figured out that he was gay years ago, but he’s only figured out his attraction to BDSM very recently. He’s been domming a friend, but they both know it’s not working, and the friend takes Sterling to a BDSM club, where he watches a well-respected dom Owen (and Sterling’s former English professor) scene with and then break off his relationship with a submissive woman. Sterling has a moment of clarity (he’s not a dominant, he’s a submissive and a masochist) and chases down Owen and asks Owen to be his dom. Owen, understandably, refuses. After all, he’s just broken off a relationship, Sterling’s a former student, not yet 21, and almost half his age. But Owen is not proof against Sterling’s persistence, and, to be honest, his beauty, and finally agrees to become Sterling’s dominant.

One thing to make clear is that this IS a dominant/submissive and sadist/masochistic relationship. Owen does not consider himself Sterling’s boyfriend. They do not have a traditional relationship. And although Sterling gets to come and their connection is a sexual one, because fundamentally, BDSM *is* aobut sex, Owen refuses to have either anal or oral sex with Sterling until Sterling is 21. Which pisses Sterling off, because he’s not a patient person, and over which they fight a few times. Which makes it awkward every now and then when they’re not in dom/sub roles and find they have very little in common. This is the one concern I had with the book: what kind of relationship can they have beyond the D/s? Because at the end of the book, they’re together as committed partners as well as dom/sub, and I think the relationship building gets skimmed a little too much and I wonder what they’ll talk about of an evening when they’re just lounging around together.

That aside, everything else is wonderfully done. The characterizations are perfectly clear: Sterling’s bratty but conflicted, so used to getting his own way, brought up to be a hard-ass by his dick of a father, but so desperate to submit, to serve, but so eager to get off because OMG, he’s 20 and a walking erection. And Owen’s older and wiser and very much in control but still vulnerable to a pretty pout and a desperate “please,” just like we all are. And oh, the BDSM is beautifully done. The scenes are hot and these boys TALK. In fact, that’s part of the characterization: both Sterling and Owen are in their heads too much, too smart not to take apart everything they do, alone and together. And so the reader understands every step of the way, everything that’s going on.

In fact, at a climactic (harhar) point in the book, Owen says to Sterling, “I’m not your father,” which causes Sterling to freak out and leave. And the characterization is so perfectly done that even though the scene was told from Owen’s perspective, I was in both of their heads to such an extent that I knew why Owen had said that (he wanted Sterling to know he wasn’t doing something to punish him the way Sterling’s asshole of a father did), felt his utter shock when Sterling reacted apparently illogically by running away from a reassurance, and yet, at the same time, completely understood WHY Sterling was running away (he thought Owen was saying that he thought Sterling was looking for a father figure and he felt Owen didn’t really know him). The scene was so well-done it actually pulled me out because I was astounded at how well I viscerally understood the motivations and feelings of both Sterling and Owen right away.

Back to the BDSM, though. It’s a very formal BDSM. Owen likes things just so and is very much into training Sterling. It sounds too much like hard work to me, especially since Sterling’s quite so much of a brat, but you make it work beautifully, precisely because it’s so much a part of their characters. And the BDSM is done lovingly and well. Here’s an description of Sterling’s masochism:

God, it hurt like nothing else ever. He screamed so desperately that it didn’t even come out very loud; there just wasn’t enough air behind it to create volume. It was like his nerve endings were using up all his oxygen, and he couldn’t breathe or think through the searing pain.

He couldn’t do anything. He was gone.

The scary part was how fucking good it felt, the bright agony ripping him free of restraints that weren’t made of rope or chain. He used the pain, just as Owen had told him to, shaped it, loved it, let it take him. Dimly, distantly, he felt his climax begin, lagging long moments behind his scream, an afterthought, as if his body was trying to kill the pain with pleasure, which was stupid, really, because they were both the same.

And one of Owen’s sadism:

“It’ll hurt,” Owen said, and there was something in his voice that told Sterling how much it would hurt and how much Owen wanted to do it. It was hard to wrap his head around at the beginning of their relationship; the way that for all Owen made him feel safe and protected, Owen got off on hurting him, leaving him bruised, marked, crying. With anyone else, that would have freaked Sterling out, but he didn’t just love Owen, he trusted him. Totally. No limits.

It was what allowed him to ask for more than he could take, made reckless by arousal, knowing that Owen was more aware of his limits than he was. Spanking him scarlet and hot turned Owen on, but controlling Sterling, reining him in, curbing his impulses, did even more for him, and Sterling knew that.

But both of these are told from Sterling’s perspective and brings up one tiny niggle more that’s my own personal issue more than anything else. You GET submission *and* masochism, or at least Sterling does a brilliant job of showing it to us and making us understand it. But when we’re in Owen’s head, it’s much more about the dominance than it is about the sadism. Yes, he gets off on hurting Sterling, but that’s much less explored than his dominance is. And that disappointed me slightly. But not enough not to thoroughly enjoy this book.

The book was a wonderful, slow, thoughtful read with some really REALLY great sex and a fascinating depiction of some very formal, very safe, and yet still emotionally dangerous BDSM. The plot of the book, such as it is, is focused on the emotional trajectory of the relationship and on Sterling’s issues with his idiotic father. There’s no suspense plot, no saving the world, nothing but two people falling in love as they explore each other, both physically and emotionally. Which is why the lack of exploration of what they have in common besides BDSM and hot hot sex was vaguely disappointing as well. But only vaguely. In the end, I trusted that they’d stay together because they were both too damn stubborn to do anything else: Bound and Determined indeed.

This excellent book really captured my attention throughout. The characters of Sterling and Owen are both so well written that neither one overshadows the other, instead I found them to be a perfect foil for each other. Sterling is young and eager, excited by the lifestyle yet at times almost overwhelmed by it. At first he appears to be just a guy wanting to learn about the kink he's interested in, but as more of the real Sterling is revealed we see a young man deeply affected by the pressures of trying to meet the expectations of a hard inflexible father and a mother who while she loves her son puts her husband first in all things. Sterling's relationship with his father has a very big effect on his psyche and more than once on his relationship with Owen.

To say that I liked this book is not enough. I loved it. Sterling and Owen are wonderful characters and the relationship between them was very well written, from that first awkward meeting at the club to the beautiful and romantic ending their story touched my heart. The secondary characters in the story are also well written and add depth to the story, from Sterling's family to Owen's friends, they all contribute to the richness of the storyline.

This is a book that is going straight to my keeper shelf. Fans of Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow will definitely not want to miss out on reading their latest fabulous book.

My first thought after finishing Bound and Determined was this–if you’re a fan of the BDSM genre, this is one story you don’t want to miss. Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow have written a book that tackles the emotional aspect of the D/s relationship head-on. It’s effective and captivating, and ensures the reader doesn’t want to put the book down from start to finish.

When the journey begins, you’ll meet a young and impressionable Sterling. He’s intrigued by the BDSM lifestyle, but can’t find the right person to train him properly. He’s arrogant and cocky, aware of his good lucks and charm. You’ll sway back and forth, teetering on the brink of like and dislike for him, until you experience the hell that has been his life before he escaped a home consisting of a bigot father and a subservient mother. His homosexuality is difficult enough to reveal–and consequently defend–to those he loves without adding his need for total submission into the mix. Desperate to unlock his baser needs and desires, he turns to the one man he never expected to meet at a BDSM club; his one-time college Professor, Owen Sawyer.

Owen is the opposite of Sterling on several levels. He’s considerably older, confident, and self-assured. Because of his standards as a Dom, finds himself without a sub more often than not. When Sterling comes to him, pleading to be trained, he’s intrigued but skeptical. Agreeing only under the term that they will not become sexually involved until Sterling’s twenty-first birthday, Owen is shocked to discover the young man he’s training is the submissive he’s always longed for.

There is really so much more to the story, but I think the best way to enjoy Bound and Determined is by going in blind. Trust me when I say there are plenty of twists and turns along the way, some of which you won’t see coming. I was shocked at times, humbled at others, and hanging on the edge of my seat by the end.

The scenes with Sterling and his father will put you through the wringer, but are balanced wonderfully by the flourishing relationship between Sterling and Owen. Sterling is someone you want to nurture and protect, while Owen is a Dom you’d be more than happy to kneel before. By the time I finished, I loved them both equally.

Bound and Determined is must read that has to go on your TBR list.

I was first drawn to Bound and Determined by the cover, title, blurb, and then the excerpt. This book just had everything going for it. When I began reading, I was drawn into a dramatic scene in a BDSM club, and I thought for sure that I had a definite winner on my hands.

I had all these ideals in my head of the romantic side of this budding relationship. This is not the first BDSM book that I have read. In fact, I have read many, and it is one of my preferred genres to read. However, I have never read one quite like this. Yes, it is obvious that these authors know their characters, the dynamics of a BDSM relationship, and how to write a compelling and intriguing book. However, for over the first half of the book, I felt a bit lost. I couldn't put my finger on why I wasn't just infatuated, nor why I couldn't stop reading when I wasn't feeling it. I then realized that the normal relationship building just wasn't there. The romance was overshadowed by the sadomasochism.

Owen and Sterling seemed to be a perfect fit, and were excellent characters, but there was a problem. There really was nothing between them except for the BDSM. They didn't do anything outside of that part of their relationship. When they finally began acting a little more like a couple and less like teacher/student, I found myself enjoying the book even more. By the end of the book, I was totally immersed in the story and characters.

Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow did a wonderful job of writing Owen and Sterling. They were each obviously their own person, with their own issues and quirks, which only made them that much more fun to get to know.

If you are looking for a sweet and tender romance, or at least as sweet as a BDSM romance can be, then this book may not fit that bill. However, if you enjoy the BDSM relationship, with a focus on the sadomasochism part, paired with very well written characters, then you may want to pick up a copy of Bound and Determined.

Authors Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow have teamed together to bring the readers an excellent story set in the world of BDSM. Bound and Determined tells the story of two men, one a novice and the other a long time member. The men already have a past history that would make a new relationship difficult. Yet as the authors bring them together, they do so in a way that the reader will enjoy. Sterling, who believes he has all the makings of a Dom, is surprised to find out otherwise; something that throws his psyche in turmoil. As the authors do an excellent job bringing the characters to life, it is easy for the reader to understand why this change is, at first, hard for Sterling to accept.

Owen is maybe a little harder to get a handle on. As a long time participant and well-known Dom, he is searching for the perfect sub. Although there were a couple of things regarding Owen that I wondered about, I felt he was the perfect foil for Sterling’s personality. His knowledge allowed him to ‘see’ Sterling and guide him accordingly. All of this leads to some intensely passionate scenes, of course .

The authors also do an excellent job showcasing the world of BDSM itself. Throughout the story, there are constant acknowledgments of the need for safety, as well as knowing one’s limits within a scene. If you enjoy BDSM stories, be sure to pick this one up.

Review by Jenre

One thing I found most interesting about this book is that for once I could really see how submitting to another person is beneficial for the sub character in a BDSM story. Sterling is a strong, forceful man who has spent years fighting to get the upper hand over his domineering father. His natural reaction to authority is to push and rebel, so he automatically assumes he is a Dom. After meeting Owen, Sterling realises that what he actually needs is someone to submit to, to have the power taken away from him and allow another to dominate him. This frees Sterling from the struggles in his life, especially those to do with his father. The scenes where Owen teaches this to Sterling, showing how liberating it is to allow another to take over, were extremely well done, especially as we get to see the slow changes in feelings that the men have from BDSM teacher/pupil towards lovers.

Another thing I liked about the book is that it was so much more than just the sex, which again made it different from some other BDSM books that I have read. Although the many BDSM scenes in the book have sexual undertones, the men do not actually engage in sex with each other until quite late on in the book. This meant that many of the scenes where Owen is teaching Sterling about being a sub were more emotion led than overtly sexual. Sterling has many needs and problems and they all have to be dealt with by Owen one by one before he can move onto the next stage. During this time Owen makes just as many mistakes as Sterling and this was another aspect I liked. All too often the Dom is portrayed as a god-like figure who knows all the answers, but in this book Owen doesn't have the answers, lets his feelings get in the way and occasionally messes up. He seemed, in fact, like a human being who is doing his best to help the man he is falling in love with. I think it helped that we see both men's points of view, because that means that I was able to understand Owen's motivations just as much as Sterling's.

As far as BDSM stories go, this one was very tame in terms of the type of BDSM used in the book. It's mostly kept to spankings, some scenes where Owen is tied up, a little wax play and the occasional use of paddles and crops. This means that the book will probably be accessible to most readers. As the book is basically following Owen as he teaches Sterling about how to be a sub, there were many times when Owen explains what he is doing and why, as well as how to keep their playing safe. Because of this, I think this would possibly be a good book for someone who thinks they may like BDSM romance and needs a gentle introduction to it. It also helps that the book has a strong romantic theme and I found it interesting that Sterling is the one to teach Owen about that side of their relationship.

There were a couple of niggles about the book. Sterling seemed incredibly isolated for a young man at college. He only seems to have one friend, Alex, and they've only met recently. I couldn't understand why Sterling didn't have a circle of friends his own age and it was never really explained why he was so much on his own. Another slight niggle is that Sterling's father is so much of a monster that he tipped slightly too much into overly dramatic in my opinion. We are never told why he treats Sterling so badly, or the motivations behind his deep hatred for his son. As a result he came across as two dimensional and stereotyped.

Despite these niggles, Bound and Determined is still a terrific book. I was glued to it the whole time I was reading and didn't want to put it down. If you are looking for a BDSM book with genuine, sympathetic protagonists, who are more than just your typical Dom and sub who are defined only by those roles, then this would be the book for you. Highly recommended with a grade of 'Excellent'.

Beautifully written, Bound and Determined is a book that does not disappoint. I’ve got books by both authors and their styles compliment each other hugely and make for very cool reading.

Sterling is such a brat and I loved his spark and innate cheekiness. It is such a perfect foil for Owen’s more reserved nature and theirs is a relationship that doesn’t always go smoothly as a result. The conflict was well written with the focus centered on the characters internal struggles. It was easy to read and didn’t devolve into any silly BDSM tropes and Nancy Drew and the gang did not make an appearance I was pleased to note. heh.

The relationship between Sterling and Owen is what carries this book. The slow development of trust between both men and the exploration of their boundaries, desires, and the chemistry that has drawn them together, was what made this a cut above other BDSM novels I’ve read recently. Nothing was rushed and the authors seemed to allow Sterling and Owen to stick to their own timetable. The slow building of sexual tension as a result was off the charts and appealed to me immensely. The sex is incredibly good and they nailed that sense of trust implicit within a D/s relationship. Rawr. It was totally hot and made for magic reading.

A lush, intense and engaging read I got totally wrapped up in. If you’ve not read, then I highly recommend you get your backside over to Loose Id and buy it. One of my favourite reads this year.

Review by Elisa Rolle.

Bound and Determined pushed my comfort boundaries on the BDSM world, but strange is, not so much for me to not like it. In a way Owen, the dominant in this story, is similar to me, he thinks that a D/s relationship not necessarily means that the submissive has to loose his independency.

Sterling is not a virgin to gay sex, but he is a virgin to the BDSM world. He met Alex, a submissive, and since their relationship remained on a friends with benefits level, everything is all right, but when they tried to deepen it on an upper level, both Alex than Sterling realize that they are not right matched. At first they think it’s only a question of experience, and so Alex brings Sterling to a BDSM private club to give him an introduction on the world, but as soon as Sterling tastes that reality, he also understands that he doesn’t need to learn how to be a good Dom, he wants to be a submissive.

The author well explains Sterling’s reasons, he comes from a very difficult relationship with his father, a relationship that was always a challenge to prove that Sterling was not alike his own father due to the fact that his father wanted for him to be his own replica. Even if Sterling has never really done coming out, his father knows and obviously doesn’t approve; Sterling has opposing feelings on that, he doesn’t want so much his father’s approval to deny his own sexuality, but unconsciously he is trying to prove that he is man enough always playing the top in his relationship. But that is not Sterling’s true nature, he is unwillingly trying to follow his father’s step, and instead Sterling needs a strong hand to lead him.

Sterling is quite the bratty type, both in his public than private life. He is always challenging the people he meets, something that he is probably projecting from his own experience with his father. And more the person on the other side is an authoritative figure, and more Sterling challenges them. So it was with Owen, Sterling’s literature teacher when he was a freshman in college. Now Owen is no more Sterling’s teacher, but when they meet again in the club, Owen would like to not move their acquaintance on a deeper level. Owen well remembers Sterling, his bratty behaviour, his stubbornness… for any other Dom those would be faults, for Owen instead are reasons to be attracted by Sterling. Owen knows that, if he accepts to be Sterling’s Dom, he will not be able to remain detached, since Sterling represents the perfect “submissive” he is searching, ab absurbo a submissive who is not immediately ready to submit.

In a way Owen is a teacher both in College than in the Club: he likes to teach how to behave, in all the fields he plays on. And so Sterling is a temptation, since teaching to him how to behave is a very satisfying challenge. Problem is that Owen also understands that Sterling is searching a D/s relationship to fulfil a void he has on his relationship with his father, and of Sterling doesn’t understand that, he will not be ready to have a real relationship with Owen.

I like this story since it’s not simple a means to show a kinky way to have sex, the dynamics of the BDSM world are well explained, without going into too much to be worrisome for who is not into it, and the reasons behind it are clear and understandable. Both characters are well developed and I really like Sterling, bratty and pretty at the same time, but what I like most is that also Owen likes him like that, and for him involving Sterling in a D/s relationship doesn’t mean to deprive him of that side.

What I enjoyed most about this story was the intensity of the interaction between Owen and Sterling and the BDSM was a big part of that. Perhaps more intense and detailed than I've read previously. (With the exception of The Administration Series, but in Bound and Determined there is a clear emotional involvement that develops between the protagonists that exists outside the sex). If you prefer only very light BDSM this may be too strong for you.

I really liked the fact that Sterling didn't feel able to say 'I love you'. (Which may seem a strange thing to say but it gave you such an insight into the two characters). He clearly wanted to but there was almost the sense that he felt if he said it that it would push Owen away, that it was the wrong thing to say, that it wasn't appropriate. When he finally says it you can almost feel the tension that has been building release. And I would rather wait to hear an 'I love you' and believe it, than hear it too soon and have it knock me out of the story. (In fact I'd go so far as to say I'd rather not hear it at all but know that the characters do love each other, than have them say it and it feel fake).

I do agree partly with Jenre that Sterling's father verges on a caricature, we never find out the reasons for his bigotry. Perhaps if we did, he wouldn't have felt quite so two-dimensional. However, having said that, such people do exist in real life, I just wish he could have been developed a little more.

One of the problems I've had with the m/m stories I've read recently (referring to e-books here) is that the length of them hasn't seem to done the stories justice. Too often I've felt dissatisfied with the ending of a story because I felt there was more story to tell. That wasn't the case here. I felt that even though the end is kind of 'in media res', that it was perfect. The relationship developed between the two men, went through a crisis and came out stronger on the other side.

A Reader's Journey  5/5 stars

Review by Eyre

I've read several books over the past four days, and this was the best of them all. Sterling is a brat, but his brattiness is understandable when his family situation comes to light. For some reason, his father has always hated him and his mother has never stood up for her son, so it is natural for Sterling to face dominant males with an attitude. The authors save Sterling from being annoying and petulant by allowing him to come to the realization that he needs to be submissive in order to be happy. All the years he's spent rebelling against his father haven't allowed him to know his true self. When he finally gets Owen to agree to train him, he is putting himself on the path toward happiness. As their relationship grows into something deeper, it becomes obvious that both Owen and Sterling meet each others needs in ways that no one else can. Sterling is both submissive and challenging. Owen is firm and tender. I would love to see these characters a few years down the road. I'm sure that their relationship would still be dynamic, sexy, and tender.
