Book Utopia Though you won’t find a Jane Davitt title reviewed on this blog, I’ve read her before and enjoyed her intelligent eroticism to the point where I always check out her new titles when they come out. I don’t buy them all. I still need to read the blurb and excerpt and determine if it’s a book that interests me. But I know that I generally really like her voice, and this was no exception.
The story starts with Simon receiving a visitor. Chris Ross doesn’t seem like your usual book person. His hair is dyed, his ear has multiple piercings, and his leather jacket doesn’t exactly scream bookworm. The book Chris offers to sell him, however, is not Simon’s usual fare. He recognizes it as once belonging to his ex-boyfriend, so after much negotiation—and intriguing attitude—a deal is struck. Simon calls his ex to sell it back, and discovers that Chris is more than what he seems. He’d been sleeping with the ex as well, while doing some carpentry work for him, and when the job was done, the ex kicked him to the curb without payment. This complicated scenario starts a swell of events that drive Simon to striking yet another deal with Chris, one that benefits the both of them in other ways.
The thing I like best about this author’s work is her voice. There’s a subtle intelligence to her work that consistently shines through. It comes through in details, like discussing the foxing on a book, or in carefully orchestrated erotic scenes. What I enjoy so much is that it never feels obvious. Not only is her prose some of the cleanest I come across, but it often seems effortless, too. It’s helped that her particular brand of eroticism manages to hit a lot of my buttons. Even with a simple kiss, I find myself engaged on multiple levels. That’s not true of a lot of authors.
These aspects are where this short novella shines for me. The chemistry, once Chris and Simon kiss, is electric, and the promise of it is delivered as the story progresses. I leapt through the latter portion of the book, as breathless and anxious as Simon. I came to a grinding halt, however, when a misunderstanding arose that came out of nowhere and stalled the story dead. Simon’s motivations prior to that were a little muddled, partially because he’s still in the process of figuring them out himself, and frankly, when he jumped to this particular misunderstanding, I had no idea how he got there or what he was saying. I was as confused as Chris was. Even after it’s cleared up, I didn’t get it, and it diminished my overall enjoyment of the story.
While this story isn’t quite a keeper, there’s enough chemistry and hot eroticism between the characters to make it worth the investment. One of these days, she’s going to absolutely blow my mind. I know it. Reviews by Jessewave Reviewed by Jenre 4.25/5 This novella which was originally part of the Fabulous Brits anthology appealed to me because I really like this author and also because the story is set in Britain with British characters. At 28, Simon seems older than his years. He works for the British library, collects classic children’s books and spends his evenings at home alone. When a young man, Chris, arrives on his doorstep wanting to sell a very familiar looking book, he becomes the catalyst for Simon to move away from the dull tedium of his life and start to experiment with sexual games in a way he has never considered before. I really liked Simon. He’s quiet and bookish with a wry sense of humour which I found very appealing. He’s also a rather odd mix of passivity, especially when it comes to his ex-boyfriend, Luke, and determination when it comes to not being outdone by Chris. The story is completely focused on the two men with all the action taking place between them. They spend a lot of time talking with each other and I liked how the conversations were varied in tone from very stilted at first to something more natural as we see their relationship develop on it’s way to a HFN. The main part of the story deals with an agreement between the men which leads to Simon suggesting a sexual game. I liked that he surprised himself by starting the game and that Chris is able to give Simon confidence and control through the role playing they adopt. In fact the theme of control runs all the way through the story. Simon has no control when it comes to his ex-boyfriend and revels in the fact that Chris allows him to take control. This control isn’t done through physical force – although there is a little bit of tying up during sex – but more about submission to the desires of another person, and I found this theme interesting and highly erotic. If I have a niggle about the story is was that there was a slightly irritating misunderstanding towards the end of the story. This happens because Simon suddenly loses his control over the situation the men are in at the time and he reacts badly. However, this misunderstanding is resolved very quickly so it didn’t annoy me as much as a lengthy separation would have done. Overall this is an enjoyable story about two seemingly opposite men who end up having more in common than either of them thought at first. I would recommend it it those who like tightly written character based stories, and who like a slow erotic build up in their sex scenes. Fallen Angel Reviews Bound Together by Jane Davitt Reviewed by Hayley Simon Weatherly is surprised when a handsome Chris Ross shows up on his doorstep with a valuable book that Simon knows belongs to his ex-lover. It seems that Luke has been up to his old ways and cheated Chris of his wages and thrown him out of his bed. So, in retaliation Chris has taken the book and is looking for a buyer. But, things aren’t always what they appear, and Simon of all people should know to never judge a book by its cover. A relatively new author to me, I only recently read her collaborative series with Alexa Snow, Jane Davitt has written a sweet tale of betrayal and redemption. Yes, a sweet tale, Simon is still recovering from being used by Luke, and Chris is freshly burned but all is not as it appears on the surface. How ironic that their mutual past with the same man might just be the basis for finding what they truly need. Ms. Davitt has managed to turn a potentially awkward plot device into a sexually exciting short story. Joyfully Reviewed “Bound Together” by Jane Davitt,
reviewed by Cassie Children’s book collector Simon Weatherly is surprised when a young man comes to his home to sell him a rare old book of erotica out of revenge. Then he realizes how the man came to have the book, and decides to purchase it, knowing he’ll only end up losing money on the deal. When the young man, Chris Ross, discovers what Simon has done, he insists on repaying him. Will they come to an arrangement that will suit them both? The set-up of “Bound Together” was odd, yet it worked. The chemistry between wild Chris and straight-laced Simon was hot. There’s emotion, too, along with a satisfying ending, making “Bound Together” my favorite story in the anthology. Fabulous Brits is a fun, hot anthology. The variety of settings and storylines are enjoyable and interesting, and the British theme was really neat. If you’re in the mood for sexy British guys who love other guys, you can’t go wrong with Fabulous Brits.Joyfully Reviewed (audio book) “Bound Together” by Jane Davitt, reviewed by Jo Bound Together brings two strong willed men together in a relationship that leads to discoveries for both of them. Simon is a quiet man who does his job and collects his books without making any huge waves. Chris has no problems getting in your face if he thinks he needs to, but he is very serious about his carpentry work. Listening while these two tried to figure out a way to be together and yet still be themselves was an interesting journey. I enjoyed listening to their journey of discovery that became very emotional at times. I will admit that Bound Together was the first audio book I have ever reviewed. While doing so I discovered just how much the author's detail along with the narrator's voice meant to the details of the book. In this case, the narrator's voice was perfect for Chris and Simon while Jane Davitt created a book that engages the reader's attention. Bound Together will take you wonderfully along the highs and lows that happen during the first stage of a relationship. Rainbow Reviews (audio book) “Bound Together” by Jane Davitt, reviewed by British Bull Dog Extract from review: The title is clever ~ “bound” referring to books, bondage, and a relationship. I always appreciate when a title has more than one possible meaning. The scenes of light bondage, though significant to the plot’s development, didn’t go on for too long. They mainly served to illustrate the power dynamic within the relationship, one which is wonderfully complex. FABULOUS BRITS by J.P. Bowie,
Reviewed by Melissa Kammer Night Owl Reviews There is more to Simon Weatherly than meets the eye. At
28 he’s almost obsessed with the collecting and preservation of
books. Although he loves all books, it’s children’s books that are
his first love. He gets a kick out of buying a huge lot of books and
going through them. Since being surrounded by books is a major
part in his life, he also works at the British library where he’s
fortunate that his job is also his hobby.
One problem with having a book obsession is he closes
himself off from others. When his horrible ex-boyfriend dumped him
six months earlier, Simon still feels the sting of that
rejection. Simon knows he’s not doing himself any justice by not
going out and meeting others, but since he’s still licking his wounds
from the breakup, he’d rather be surround by something that won’t hurt
him or disappoint him…his books.
One evening Simon is surprised by a sexy and slightly rough
around the edges, handsome man. He tells Simon that he has a rare
book he’d like to sell, and knows that Simon will be very interested in
it. As soon as he unwrapped the book, he immediately recognized it
as one of his ex-lover’s favorites. Since it’s a rare book that he
himself had bought for his ex, he’s curious to how the handsome
stranger came across it. But, knowing his ex like he does, he
figures that the stranger was used just like Simon was, and in
retaliation of a broken heart or pride, the young man probably stole it
from his ex. Thinking that his ex deserves to pay for the return of the
book, he haggles over a price, and buys the book.
Chris Ross couldn’t believe his ears when his ex-boyfriend
called and said that in order to keep Chris out of jail, Simon is
GIVING the book he had stolen from him back. He had no intention
of ripping Simon off, he just wanted a little revenge against their
mutual ex, and to meet the intriguing Simon himself. In some ways
Chris feels like he already knows Simon, even though they had just
met. The ex talked about him all the time, and the pictures he had
seen of him did him no justice at all. Simon was simply gorgeous.
Since his intention was never to rip Simon off in the first
place, Chris shows back up at Simon’s and demands to pay him back in
some way. Since Simon has neglected to do some handyman projects
around the house, Chris agrees to do them for him AND anything else
Simon desires over the weekend. As the men start getting to know one
another and giving into their deep attraction to each other, will fear
and mistrust keep them apart?
I really loved this novella. I was so disappointed when
it came to an end! I wish it had been a full length novel, because
I adored both Simon and Chris and would have loved to see them develop
their relationship between them. I understand that this novella
was originally part of TEB’s Fabulous Brit’s Anthology and now it is
released as a novella on its own.
I really liked the dynamic between Simon and
Chris. They seem to fall into the beginnings of a D/s
role. Simon is starting to give into his desire to control Chris,
and Chris is enjoying submitting to Simon. There isn’t much BDSM
in this novella. There’s a little bondage and the tease of a
spanking, so those who are not fans of the BDSM themed books should
enjoy this one too.
I thought the chemistry and the emotional pull the heroes
had together was a real page turner. The story was fast paced and
it was a very quick and enjoyable read. I loved it!
