Rating: 4 stars. Full review here.

This delightful short story is filled with surprises and fun elements. The romance between Simon and Garin is wonderful and Tom’s fun antics thrown into the mix deliver an entertaining and engaging story. Mostly clean with only a few mistakes, this story will entice fantasy fans while playing with the theme of pets, and cats in particular, rather well. Although this is a romance with a solid and satisfying happy ending, what Tom is (cat or human) and how he fits into Garin and Simon’s family is a teaser up to the very end.

The ending is a slight surprise, although the quick and entertaining journey is well worth taking. The paranormal aspects are light but interesting and Tom’s dilemma keeps the story moving quickly. Plus the many nuances so characteristic of typical cats and their behavior add a fabulous wealth of humor to the story. If you’re looking for something light, fun, and thoroughly entertaining, be sure to get this offering.

Garin is a half-human, half-elf who has a hard time controlling his magic. He works as a cook and loves his job. He is in love with his human partner Simon.

Simon is Garin’s human lover. He loves Garin dearly and accepts him as he is for the most part, although he does not like it when Gavin uses magic.

Tom is a cat who has been turned into a human. Like most male cats he is randy a lot of the time.

When Garin accidentally turns a stray cat into a human, he is left with the very real problem of what to do with him now. He knows that Simon his human lover is going to be less than enthused with this latest magical debacle. Meanwhile his own attraction to the very sexy Tom could be a problem as well, for though he loves Simon, the cat in human form is very sexy. Will he be able to change Tom back to his original form? Will Simon forgive this latest transgression?

About Cat Scratch Fever is a very entertaining bit of urban fantasy romance. I truly enjoyed it and thought Ms. Davitt did an excellent job of creating a world where Elves and Cats walk among ordinary humans. Tom’s very cat-like antics had me roaring with laughter. The descriptions of Garin’s power and how it can sometimes get out of control were very well written. I also adored how Simon just took it all in stride, even when he was highly irritated by both Tom’s antics, and Garin’s slip-ups. This is a wonderful, well-written read that I am happy to give our highest rating!

Garin can't help but use his magic once in a while, much to the frustration of his totally human, magic-incapable lover, Simon. So when Garin unintentionally transforms a stray cat into an extremely horny human, not only does it put a strain on their relationship, it also means they have an incredibly troublesome pet to take care of.

While the concept of the wonders of magic clashing with the limitations of humankind sound intriguing, "Cat Scratch Fever" does not focus on that. This short story is primarily erotica, keeping the fantasy element on the sidelines and using it to serve as a good source of friction for the two lovers and as a reason to keep the snarky cat-turned-human, Tom, in the picture. As for why the former feline is so important for the erotica side of the story, he manages to attract both Garin and Simon to him, causing jealousy on the part of both, and justifying that jealousy when he attempts to initiate sexual activities with both.

Light on narrative and heavy on dialog, the strength of this story is in the dialog. Tom has an adorable way of putting things bluntly and honestly, prompting witty responses from the couple that made me chuckle. Unfortunately, dialog is the only strength when it comes to building the story. While the overall plot is unique enough to draw a person in, the irrational turns that it takes in an attempt to make it work seem somewhat unnatural, jerking the story along instead of letting it flow naturally. Just because the foremost storyline is about the couple and their third wheel, does not mean that it is all right for the events that got them there to be largely illogical. Yes, panic caused Garin to turn the unwanted cat into a human; this I buy. What I don't buy is Garin finding it easier to give Tom the ability to talk and hustle him out than to attempt turn him into a cat again.

There are readers who are perfectly content with a fractured storyline as long there is some good smut involved. It is perhaps for those people that this story is intended. There is indeed an extravagant amount of touching when not involved in actual sexual activity and when there is sexual activity, it is not just glossed over, but described in full. While not entirely flowery and soft, making gratuitous use of the words "cock" and "fuck", it is also not uncouth, containing a nice bit of soft sensuality.

Garin’s day is starting off with a buildup of his stored powers; he attracts it causing strange things to happen. He is late for work because he walked rather than risk a mishap with his car. Later that afternoon, Garin’s co-worker announces the health inspector was on the way to review the coffee shop. While cleaning the counters, Garin noticed a tom cat had sneaked in the back door. In the process of trying to remove it, the cat shifts into a man and the health inspector arrives.

Cat Scratch Fever is an amusing tale of half human, half elf Garin, his human lover Simon and the aroused cat called Tom. Jane Davitt has produced a delightful teaser to brighten your day with a little spice. I very much enjoyed this sexy little fantasy.

Garin has a teeny, tiny problem – when he doesn’t use his magic it builds up and causes unpredictable amounts of trouble.  Today Garin just knows something is going to go wrong – he can already feel the tingling that always signals a build up of magic.  But when his magical “accident” turns a stray cat into a man Garin takes him home – after all, he can’t leave him to fend for himself, right?  Too bad that Simon, Garin’s lover, doesn’t really like anything having to do with Garin’s magic and he isn’t really going to like the results of this accident!

Cat Scratch Fever is a fun and quirky romance about acceptance.  Both Garin and Tom the cat are off-the-charts weird, but Simon manages to take it all in stride and eventually becomes the stabilizing force in the trio.  When all three finally come together it will melt your bones and your heart!  Cat Scratch Fever is a great romance for a day when a touch of magic and spice is what you are looking for.

REVIEW by Singapore Sling: 4.5 out of 5

Garin, a baker at a coffee shop, is having a bad day. His boss, Sarah, tells him that a health inspector is coming around to look at the premises. Garin is cleaning up when a cat wanders into the kitchen. It refuses to leave him alone, and then it changes into a naked man. Garin – actually an elf with magical powers – manages to stall the inspector and give the man-cat – who names himself Tom – speech.

Forced to give Tom shelter, Garin sends him off with his lover, Simon, who’s aware of Garin’s unusual background. Although Tom decides he likes being human, Garin tries to undo the damage he’s caused with his overspill of magic – landing Tom in danger…

Ms Davitt has a fresh, strong voice that immediately pulled me into the story, as well as a great opening that teased the reader with the suggestions that Garin isn’t entirely human. I enjoyed the droll humour and snappy dialogue, and loved all three characters as they struggled to make sense of the new situation. Simon, especially, is a great character.

You don’t expect a lot of world-building in a novelette, but in a few paragraphs the author manages to explain Garin’s past and how his magic works, and manages to make it sound rational rather than wacky.

A fun, enjoyable story – and an author I’d look for again. Recommended.

Review from Fallen Angels Reviews (4 angels)

Garin is having a really bad day. He is suffering from the build up of his magic, and when it builds up like this the results are unpredictable and uncontrollable. He is an elf and he’s trying to live his life like a human. He has his human lover, Simon, who is well aware of his nature and his magical problems; he has a job as a baker, now if Garin could only get through the day without anything untoward happening he’d be thrilled. But, when you cross a stray tomcat, a health inspector and a nervous, anxious Garin the worst is bound to occur.

Ms. Davitt is a fun author to read. She is a recent discovery of mine and I am so happy to have found her work. Cat Scratch Fever is a perfect example of Ms. Davitt’s talent. Coming in at just under thirty pages you wouldn’t expect a lot of substance. But, in this instance, you’d be wrong. Cat Scratch Fever is full of witty banter, after all, how often do you get to see the world from the eyes of a cat turned human? Garin is adorable as the slightly befuddled Elf trying to make his way as a human. His screw ups are fun to read about. I think that Simon was great as the human boyfriend that tries to be patient and deal with Garin and the sudden acquisition of a cat in human form. An enjoyable and fun read!
